A planet that appears to lie within the "habitable zone" of a star may not be hospitable to life after all, according to an international team of scientists who said the discovery may disprove the notion of a habitable zone around stars.
The team of scientists, led by an astronomer at the University of Exeter, discovered the planet in an analysis of data gathered by the Kepler spacecraft, which was launched into space last April. Kepler is designed to find exoplanets, or planets orbiting stars other than our own, by looking for changes in the brightness of a star as the planet passes in front of it.
The new planet was discovered orbiting a star named KIC 8462852. The star is located in the Cygnus constellation and is a red dwarf with about half the mass of our own sun. Red dwarfs are about half as massive and half as bright as our sun.
"This star seems to have a huge planet passing in front of it, and we saw this 'dip' in brightness. We then analysed what had happened over the course of the mission and found that it has happened a number of times, so we were able to confirm its existence," said David Armstrong, who led the study.
